“Vision Quest” This song came to me during a point in my life where I felt like I had little understanding of where God was leading me. I was just about to finish my college education and felt like there was no clear direction from God as to where I would be going next. In my frustration of trying to find out what I was supposed to do and where I was supposed to go…the Lord spoke to me with the peaceful words of Matthew 6:33 – “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” It was at that point that I realized that my vision should be set on simply Him and not on the things that would come. This song is my musical interpretation of what it should be like to seek after the Lord with everything that I am.
“The Great Pursuit”As Christians, we sometimes like to think of our relationship with the Lord as our “walk” with God. However, 1 Corinthians 9:24 states it like this– “Do you not know that in a race all runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” If knowing God truly is the treasure our hearts were created to long for…why wouldn’t we run?
“Abide”John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” This is one of my favorite verses in all of Scripture. It reminds me to remain. My desire needs to be the same as that of the branch’s: to be connected to the Vine. Apart from it I am nothing.
“What Lies Beyond” The theme of this song, as well as the album, stems from the greatness of who God is. It is beyond any other possibility of greatness we are able to be a part of here on earth. Isaiah 55:9 puts it into perspective - “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” What an amazing reality; that the One who contains the uncontainable would allow us to have relationship with Him.
“Crimson” 1 Peter 2:24 – “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.” This song is a musical interpretation of the amazing sacrifice that was made for us, as well as the blessing we have to be forever healed from sin and live for righteousness.
“Forgotten Stillness” We live in a world where “faster” is “better.” To slow down would mean that something (or someone) is not performing at its highest level of effectiveness. Psalm 46:10, however, offers a different approach to what “better” truly is: “Be still and know that I am God….” It’s an easy thing to forget, in such an unstill world.
“Valley Cry” Psalm 23:4 – “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” Like a much-needed rainfall that restores dry land, the presence of God comes to restore the soul during the valley times. It’s comforting to know that we never walk alone.
“Almost There” I can remember finishing this song when I was home for Christmas break my sophomore year of college. This song did not have any divine inspiration behind it; so coming up with a title for the song was a bit of a challenge. After playing the song a few times to Jo Jo (my grandmother), I asked her if any title had come to mind. Letting me know that she was on to something…but wasn’t quite there yet, she said, “Almost there.” Suddenly, the song got its name.
“She Dances” This song was born out of a request given by a wonderful little girl named Lorelei Mitchell. One day, when she and her parents were in town for a visit, she wanted to show me how she could “dance like a ballerina”… and insisted that I provide the dance music. Little did I know at the time that it would take a track on my next piano solo project. Now, whenever I play this song…I always think of three-year old, little Lorelei spinning and twirling to the music and using our living room floor as her stage.
“Cloud of Witnesses” A couple of months before Brooke (my wife) and I were married, I decided to write a song for the processional of the bridesmaids and groomsmen that would be in our wedding ceremony. This is the song that came to me as I began thinking of how blessed we were to have had such an amazing cloud of witnesses around us during that season of life.
“Angel’s Waltz” I wrote this song for Brooke and played it the night that we got engaged. I will never forget that wonderful moment, when I played it to her for the first time in our church sanctuary. I will also never forget the way she looked when she walked into the sanctuary on our wedding day.
